Question 1

What is the difference between champagne and cognac diamonds?

Accepted Answer

Both are trade names for natural brown diamonds. Champagne generally describes lighter brown, from pale straw to light tan, while cognac describes deeper, richer brown, often with orange. Argyle used a scale running from light champagne to cognac. On a GIA report you will see standard terms such as Fancy Light Brown or Fancy Dark Orangy Brown.

Question 2

Are brown diamonds real diamonds?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Natural brown diamonds are real diamonds with the same hardness and durability as colourless diamonds. Brown is simply the most common natural fancy colour, which is why these stones are more affordable than pink, blue or green. They are widely used in fine jewellery, both as centre stones and in pavé and accent work.

Question 3

Are brown diamonds treated?

Accepted Answer

Most brown diamonds on the market have natural colour, but brown diamonds are also the starting material for some treatments. HPHT processing can turn certain brown diamonds colourless or yellow, and other methods can shift brown towards pink or orange. A laboratory report confirms whether the colour you are buying is natural.

Question 4

Which brown diamond colours are most valued?

Accepted Answer

Brown diamonds with attractive warm secondary hues, such as orangy, pinkish or yellowish brown, are generally the most valued. Clean, well cut stones with even colour and good brightness are preferred. Stones with greenish or greyish modifiers are usually priced lower. For jewellery lines, consistent colour across matched stones adds practical value.
