Question 1

Why are Colombian emeralds more expensive?

Accepted Answer

Colombia has a long reputation for emeralds with a warm, vivid green and a lively glow, linked to low iron content and chromium-rich chemistry. That reputation, the historic importance of mines such as Muzo and Chivor, and steady demand from collectors give Colombian origin a premium. The size of that premium depends on quality, and not every Colombian stone is finer than every emerald from elsewhere.

Question 2

Are Colombian emeralds oiled?

Accepted Answer

Most are. Oiling is a long-standing practice for Colombian emeralds and is accepted by the trade when disclosed. Some stones are treated with resins instead. Laboratories report whether a filler is present and its extent, usually from none or insignificant through to significant. Stones with no enhancement are rare and valued accordingly. Oil can dry out over time, and stones can be re-oiled.

Question 3

What is a trapiche emerald?

Accepted Answer

A trapiche emerald shows a fixed six-rayed pattern of dark spokes, formed by carbonaceous material and other inclusions trapped between six growth sectors. Unlike the star in a star sapphire, the pattern does not move with the light. Trapiche emeralds come mainly from Colombia, particularly the Muzo area, and are collected for their pattern rather than their transparency.

Question 4

Can a lab tell which Colombian mine an emerald came from?

Accepted Answer

Laboratories usually give a country of origin rather than a specific mine. Inclusions and chemistry can sometimes point towards one belt or another, but stating a single mine with confidence is difficult. Mine names such as Muzo or Chivor in a description often rest on provenance and the dealer's knowledge, so ask what supports the claim.
